Sound familiar?

  • Crossing the street every time a dog appears
  • Walking at 5 a.m. to avoid everyone
  • Embarrassed by the lunging and barking
  • Feeling judged by people who don’t get it

You’re not doing it wrong, and your dog isn’t broken. You just need a plan that fits this dog.

What reactivity really is

Reactivity is an outsized response to everyday things like other dogs, people, bikes or cars. It usually comes from fear, frustration or overexcitement. Punishment can make it worse. The proven approach changes how your dog feels about the trigger, at a distance they can handle.

What a reactivity plan includes

  • Finding your dog’s threshold distance
  • Counter-conditioning: trigger predicts treats
  • Engage-disengage games
  • Emergency U-turns for surprise encounters
  • Walk planning to reduce rehearsal

Common questions

Can a reactive dog be cured?

Most reactive dogs improve significantly, often to the point where walks are relaxed again. Progress is gradual and depends on consistency and avoiding too-close encounters during training.

Should I socialize my reactive dog at the dog park?

Usually not. Forcing exposure can deepen fear. A trainer will build comfort step by step, at a distance your dog can handle.

Is reactivity the same as aggression?

Not necessarily. Many reactive dogs have never hurt anyone. If your dog has bitten or you’re worried about safety, choose that in the quiz for immediate safety steps and guidance on finding a certified professional.
